Hangzhou
Longjing Tea, West Lake Silk, and Hangzhou Fans
Hangzhou's identity centers on West Lake — and on the products that surround it. Longjing (Dragon Well) green tea, grown on the surrounding hills, is China's most famous green tea. Hangzhou silk and folding fans (made with bamboo and silk) are equally celebrated.
Craft Heritage
Longjing tea has been produced for over 1,200 years and was designated "imperial tribute tea" by the Qianlong Emperor in 1762. The 18 original imperial tea trees still exist in the Lion Peak (Shifeng) area. Hangzhou silk weaving dates to 4,700 years ago, with continuous techniques refined through dynasties.
Why Authentic
Authentic pre-Qingming Longjing (picked before April 5) commands premium prices ($200-800/lb). The leaves are flat, smooth, and have a chestnut aroma. Common "Longjing-style" green tea sold cheaply is rarely from West Lake.
