Stone rubbings (ๆ็) preserve the calligraphy of stone-carved monuments. Xi'an's Forest of Steles (็ขๆ) holds over 3,000 stelae from the Tang and earlier dynasties โ a stone library of Chinese calligraphy. Rubbings are made by applying paper to the stone and gently inking the surface.
