Tang Sancai Horse Sculpture

唐三彩马

Xi'an

Faithful reproduction of the famous Tang dynasty sancai horse. Sancai (三彩, "three colors") uses lead-based glazes — green, brown-yellow, and cream — that flow together in the kiln to produce the characteristic dripping color effect. Originally tomb objects for the Tang aristocracy, these pieces are now collector's items.

Craft Story

Tang sancai (618-907 CE) is considered one of the great achievements of world ceramics. The horse is the most iconic subject — Tang China was a horse-loving society, and elaborate funerary horses accompanied aristocrats to the afterlife. Most originals are in major museums (British Museum, Met, Shanghai Museum).
