Yixing

The Purple Clay Teapot Capital

Yixing is famous worldwide for one thing: zisha (紫砂, purple clay) teapots. The unique mineral composition of Yixing clay produces teapots that improve with use — they "season" with tea oils over years, eventually brewing tea even with plain hot water.

Craft Heritage

Yixing zisha pottery dates to the Song Dynasty. The clay deposits here, formed millions of years ago, contain a unique blend of iron, quartz, and mica. By the Ming Dynasty, scholar-officials prized Yixing teapots above all others. The most famous master, Gu Jingzhou (1915-1996), has pieces that sell at Sotheby's for over $1 million.

Why Authentic

Real Yixing zisha is unglazed and porous. Tap a real one — it makes a soft, low sound. Glazed or shiny "Yixing-style" teapots are not zisha. Mature workshops will provide certificates and the artisan's seal.

Visit During Your Journey

Our Imperial Bespoke route includes optional Yixing studio visits — meet master ceramicists, see the clay processing, and choose a piece (or commission one).
